Dryer Not Heating? Here Are the 5 Most Likely Causes

By GTA Appliance Pros

A dryer that spins but produces no heat is one of the most common appliance calls we receive across the GTA. The drum tumbles, the cycle runs, but your clothes come out just as damp as they went in. The good news: dryers are mechanically straightforward, and the cause is almost always one of a small number of components.

1. Blown thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is the most common cause of a no-heat dryer. It's a one-time safety device that blows if the dryer overheats — usually because of a clogged vent. Once blown, it won't reset and the dryer won't heat until it's replaced. The fix is inexpensive ($80–$130), but you must also clean the vent to prevent it from blowing again.

2. Faulty heating element (electric dryers). The heating element is a coil of resistance wire that heats the air inside the drum. When it breaks, the dryer runs cold. You can sometimes see a visible break in the coil. Heating element replacement typically costs $120–$200 including parts and labour.

3. Failed gas valve coils (gas dryers). Gas dryers use solenoid coils to open the gas valve when the burner needs to ignite. When one or more coils fail, the igniter glows but the burner won't stay lit — so the dryer heats briefly then goes cold. Coil replacement is usually $130–$220.

4. Faulty cycling thermostat. The cycling thermostat regulates the air temperature inside the drum by cycling the heating element on and off. When it fails, the dryer may produce no heat at all, or may overheat. Thermostat replacement typically runs $90–$160.

5. Clogged dryer vent. A blocked vent is the root cause behind many dryer heating problems — including blown thermal fuses. When hot, moist air can't escape, the dryer overheats and shuts down the heating circuit as a safety measure. Clean your dryer vent at least once a year. If the duct run is long or has multiple bends, consider professional cleaning.

When should you repair vs. replace? Dryers are mechanically simple and most repairs are cost-effective even on older units. If your dryer is under 12 years old, repair almost always makes sense. The exception is a drum bearing failure on a very old unit — at that point, replacement may be more economical.
