How Long Do Home Appliances Last? A GTA Homeowner's Guide
One of the most common questions we hear from GTA homeowners is: 'Should I repair this or just replace it?' The answer depends on the appliance's age, the cost of the repair, and how well it's been maintained. Here's a practical guide to expected appliance lifespans — and the rule of thumb we use when advising customers.
Refrigerators: 13–17 years. A well-maintained fridge can last close to two decades. If yours is under 10 years old and the repair cost is less than half the replacement cost, repair is almost always the right call. After 15 years, weigh the repair cost against the energy savings of a newer, more efficient model.
Washing machines: 10–14 years. Front-loaders tend to last slightly longer than top-loaders when properly maintained. Common end-of-life issues include bearing failure and drum problems. If your washer is over 12 years old and needs a major repair, replacement may make more sense.
Dryers: 10–13 years. Dryers are mechanically simpler than washers and often outlast them. Regular vent cleaning is the single biggest factor in dryer longevity — a blocked vent makes the machine work harder and can be a fire hazard. Most dryer repairs are cost-effective even on older units.
Dishwashers: 9–12 years. Dishwashers have a shorter lifespan than most major appliances. Pump and motor failures are common after the 8-year mark. If your dishwasher is under 7 years old, repair is usually worth it. After 10 years, consider the repair cost carefully.
Ovens and stoves: 13–15 years. Gas ranges tend to outlast electric models. Individual components like igniters, heating elements, and control boards are usually repairable at any age. Full oven replacement is rarely necessary unless there's structural damage.
Microwaves: 9–10 years. Built-in over-the-range microwaves last longer than countertop models. Repair is generally worth it for built-ins; countertop microwaves are often more economical to replace.
The 50% rule. Our general guideline: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the cost of a comparable new appliance, and the unit is in the second half of its expected lifespan, replacement is worth considering. We'll always give you an honest assessment — we'd rather lose a repair job than have you spend money that doesn't make sense.
