Washer Not Draining? Here's What to Check Before Calling a Technician

By GTA Appliance Pros

Finding your washing machine full of water at the end of a cycle is one of the more common appliance problems we see across the GTA. The cause is almost always one of a few things — and some of them you can check yourself before calling a technician.

Check the drain hose first. The drain hose runs from the back of the washer to your standpipe or laundry tub. Make sure it isn't kinked, clogged, or pushed too far into the standpipe. The hose end should sit no more than 6 inches into the standpipe.

Clean the pump filter. Front-load washers have a small access panel at the bottom front of the machine. Behind it is a pump filter that catches lint, coins, and small items. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of drainage failure — and cleaning it takes about five minutes. Have towels ready; water will spill out.

Check for a clogged drain pump. If the filter is clean and the hose is clear, the drain pump itself may be blocked or failing. You might hear a humming sound as the pump tries to run but can't move water. This is a job for a technician — the pump needs to be accessed and inspected.

Look at the lid switch (top-loaders). Top-loading washers won't spin or drain if the lid switch is faulty. The machine thinks the lid is open and stops the cycle for safety. If your top-loader fills and agitates but won't drain or spin, a failed lid switch is a likely culprit.

Control board issues. Less commonly, a faulty control board can interrupt the drain cycle. If you've checked everything else and the machine still won't drain, a technician will need to run diagnostics on the electronics.
