Why Is My Fridge Not Cooling? 6 Common Causes (and When to Call a Tech)
A refrigerator that stops cooling is one of the most stressful appliance failures a homeowner can face. Every hour counts when perishables are at risk. The good news: most cooling failures come down to a handful of well-known causes, and a certified technician can diagnose and fix most of them in a single visit.
1. Dirty condenser coils. The condenser coils release heat from the refrigerant. When they're coated in dust and pet hair, they can't dissipate heat efficiently — and your fridge warms up. Vacuuming them every 6–12 months is the single best thing you can do to extend your fridge's life.
2. Faulty evaporator fan motor. The evaporator fan circulates cold air from the freezer into the fridge compartment. If the fan motor fails, the freezer may still be cold while the fridge section warms up. You'll often hear unusual noises — or no fan noise at all — when this part is failing.
3. Defrost system failure. Modern fridges run automatic defrost cycles to prevent ice buildup on the evaporator coils. If the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer fails, ice accumulates and blocks airflow. The result: a fridge that feels warm even though the compressor is running.
4. Worn door gaskets. The rubber seal around your fridge door keeps cold air in and warm air out. A cracked or loose gasket lets warm air seep in constantly, forcing the compressor to work overtime. Test yours by closing the door on a piece of paper — if it slides out easily, the seal needs replacing.
5. Low refrigerant. Refrigerant leaks are less common but do happen, especially in older units. If your fridge is running constantly but never reaching temperature, a refrigerant issue may be the cause. This requires a certified technician with the right equipment to diagnose and repair safely.
6. Compressor failure. The compressor is the heart of the refrigeration system. When it fails, the fridge simply cannot cool. Compressor replacement is one of the more expensive repairs — a technician will advise whether repair or replacement makes more financial sense for your unit's age and condition.
